Shellfish areas usually receive a large number of introduced species. During the present project, we specially focused on 4 marine benthic molluscs introduced in shellfish areas along the Channel and Atlantic coasts of France: the gastropods Crepidula fornicata, Ocinebrellus inornatus and Cyclope neritea, and the bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum. Our study was conducted according to three main axes: (i) the characterization of introduction and expansion patterns of species within their newly colonized area. In the three invasive gastropods C. fornnicata, C. neritea and 0. inornatus, a high level of genetic diversity was detected in the French populations which indicated a complex process of introduction (with multiple population sources or secondary... |

The Millenium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) demonstrated that the biodiversity is the keystone for the sustainaibility of present and future ecosystems services. In spite of the highly significant effort carried out by the Census of Marine Life over the last ten years, and an increasing research effort, marine biodiversity and precise ecosystem functioning remain largely unknown and failure to reach the CBD 2010 objectives is obvious. Meanwhile, the concept of ‘ecosystem approach’ is progressing, translated into new policies such as the revised European Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). We might question if the scientific community is ready enough to built scenarios for the future and provide integrated advice to the policy makers for biodiversity conservation... |

(NOT controlled OCR ) The main activity in French shellflshing is culturing. Most culture involves oysters, Grassostrea gigas, and Ostrea edulis; mussels, Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis; and to a lesser extent the scallop, Pecten maximus, and the exotic Manila clam, Tapes philippinarum. Wild species harvested include the whelk, Buccinum undatum; abalone, Haliotis tuberculata; and bivalves, such as the cockle, Cerasioderma edule, pectinids, Chlamys varia and Aequipecten opercularis; and several clams, e.g., Mercenaria mercenana and Venerupis rhomboïdes. Recreational landings are substantial. The flat oyster, 0. edulis, has been part of human diets for centuries. Natural beds were exploited through the Middle Ages until the last century by... |

The trophic resources of cultivated mussel have! been characterized and their contribution to the food of these molluscs estimated in the Bay of Aiguillon (France) through the analysis of their natural C and N isotope composition. The contribution of terrestrial organic matter (δ(13)C = -27 to -34 %0) to mussel food resources is around 10% along the year, except in winter (15 10 30 %). A large seasonal variation is observed in the utilization of oceanic phytoplanktoll (δ(13)C = -19 to -21.5 %0) and of littoral benthic productions (microphytobenthos and phanerogame detritus,δ(13)C = -12.0 to -16.7 %0). Overall, the main food source of mussels is formed by benthic productions for molluscs grown on poles, in peculiar in the South of... |

In oyster production area the determination of the stock, estimation of mortality and growth rates are determinant for knowledge of the fishery. Growth models can be used to predict the time to reach marketable size (76 mm in Chesapeake Bay). They are also important in term of management, when they can predict the future value of the stock (Askew, 1978). Oyster growth models can be built by analysing growth of natural oysters but absolute age is orten unknown. Many authors report growth data in Chesapeake Bay for suspended oyster culture. Unfortunalely, modelisation of the growth was not developed. In that study oyster, shell growth models have been established at three stations in the Patuxent river. Seasonal eITects on growth were integrated in the model |

Oyster farming is the main aquaculture activity in France, where Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is spatially cultured from the English Channel to the Mediterranean coasts. Oyster growth performance monitored along French coasts are widely heterogeneous among culture sites and over years. Many studies have been carried out to understand the effects of environmental factors on oyster growth and physiology, by using bioenergetics growth models. However, most of these studies were site-specific. As an example, the model developed by Barillé et al. (1997), which was extensively specified with more than 50 parameters, was validated in the Marennes-Oléron Bay, but cannot be successfully applied to other culture sites without re-estimating parameters or... |

A bio-energetic model, based on the DEB theory exists for the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Pouvreau et al. [Pouvreau, S., Bourles, Y., Lefebvre, S., Gangnery, A., Alunno-Bruscia, M., 2006. Application of a dynamic energy budget model to the Pacific oyster, C. gigas, reared under various environmental conditions. J. Sea Res. 56, 156167.] successfully applied this model to oysters reared in three environments with no tide and low turbidity, using chlorophyll a concentration as food quantifier. However, the robustness of the oyster-DEB model needs to be validated in varying environments where different food quantifiers reflect the food available for oysters, as is the case in estuaries and most coastal ecosystems. We therefore tested the oyster-DEB... |

Placopecten magellanicus production in Saint Pierre et Miquelon (NW North Atlantic) has been developed through direct seeding of juveniles on leased areas. However, most of the culture occurs in deep water ranging from 30 to 70 meters, which requires a monitoring by video to facilitate the grow-out and survival evaluation. In August 2008, a submersible leaded structure was connected by a video cable to the surface and observation screen was defined through the video, an altimeter and two lasers. The pictures were recorded on board on hard drive and digital video recorder DVCAM, and data were georeferenced by VIDEONAV software. Analysing the video tapes allows to establish a thematic database on the ground structure, presence or absence of seeded and wild... |

The summer mortality patterns was studied in 1996 on the Ronce-les-Bains oyster bank (175 ha), located on the southern part of the Bay Marennes-Oleron (Atlantic coastline). Studies on growth, sexual maturation, survival rates and environmental variables were compared at fifteen experimental sites (on- and off-bottom culture). After 7 months, cumulative mortality reached 8-19 and 23-33% for off-bottom and on-bottom culture, respectively which is significantly higher for the latter case. A seasonal mortality trend was noted, with a significant increase related to air temperature greater than 20 degrees C and with a significant pre-spawning glycogen catabolism. Based on soft tissue flesh growth results from both types of culture, several empirical models were... |

The cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas was first introduced in France in 1967 [13]. On the Atlantic coast, the Marennes Oléron Bay (Figure 1) is the first European oyster culture basin with a cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas) stock of 110,000 tons and an annual output of 30,000 to 40,000 tons. The Ronce oyster bank, located at the south of the bay (Figure 1), is made of 1,600 concessions spread out over 175 ha. It produces 8,000 to 10,000 tons of cupped oysters each year. In Japan, Crassostrea gigas has been cultivated for more than 1,000 years (Farley, 1992). Since the beginning of the 1960's, oyster mortality has multiplied throughout the world (Imaï et al., 1965; Sinderman, 1976; Mackin, 1961; Beattie et al, 1980). In the 60's and 70's, Japan and the west... |

The 1999 monitoring of the C. gigas mortality rates showed a 32 to 40% loss for the on-bottom rearings located on the Ronce-Perquis oyster bank. In 1997, the averaged mortality rate varied between 23 and 29% without significant site effect. These mortality rates were ranging from 17 to 32% in 1998 with significant limited mortality rate on site 4 (17%). However, those rates were underestimated by 7 to 8%, based on our 1999 study, Actually, the spatial distribution for these rates on 2 experimental sites divided into 25 subunits demonstrated a large variability ranging from 17-37% and 22-56% for sites 1 and 2, respectively. In spite this large variability, the mortality rates results were larger on the muddy bottom site. In contrast to site 1, the oysters... |
